This session will look at current brain research and how it impacts assessment practices and outcomes for students. The 2-days will be divided into several sections that cover the latest brain research in key areas related to special education, assessment, and education practices and supports. The topics for each day are as follows:
Day One
- This is The Brain…This is The Brain on Learning and Behavior – This session will discuss the latest research on how the human brain learns and creates behaviors. Discussions will also cover what the brain needs for optimal learning and optimal behavior outcomes.
- This is The Brain…This is The Autistic Brain – This section will cover brain research in autism and its implications for assessment considerations, classrooms, and homes. This session will cover some extraordinary findings that give us a whole new understanding of autism and its potential effects on an individual.
Day Two
- This is The Brain…This is The Brain on Reading (and Dyslexia) – This section will look at the brain research in reading and will discuss how the brain learns to read. Dyslexia is a huge topic of interest in Texas right now, and looking the brain research and understanding some of the ways dyslexia changes the brain can be key to assessment and interventions in our schools.
- This is The Brain…This is How to Develop, Strengthen, and Maintain a Strong Brain – This section will bring it al together with discussion about executive function activities and their impact on changing individual brains. The activities will be divided into various age groups from birth to adolescence (age 22). Participants will spend some time experimenting and discussing how these activities can be implemented in IEPs and programs.
